Cottage Style
1st Thursday -Home Decor:
While
painting a bookshelf in our green room,
| BEFORE |
| AFTER |
I wondered about all the different
cottage styles. I think overall, my home is decorated in ‘cottage style’ but not
just one type of ‘cottage style’. I am working on making my
green room a Shabby Chic cottage style, but while reviewing the many
different types of cottage style – I think it will be a combination of Shabby
Chic, Romantic and Cottage Garden.
While shopping a flea market last week I found these
Two's Company plates.
I have had these on my wish list for quite a while. I actually found three at Goodwill and two at the flea market - the very same day!
There
are an amazing variety of cottage styles
English
Cottage
French
Cottage
Shabby
Chic Cottage
Romantic
Cottage
Country
Cottage
Beach
Cottage
Cottage
Garden
and two
relatively newer versions
Prairie
Cottage
and
Swedish Cottage.
I think
each have similar elements beginning
with what makes you happy – what is
beautiful to you.
a touch
of rustic style such as the use of painted furniture and roosters.
Romantic
Cottage is covered in floral touches, pinks and feminine touches.
Country
Cottage is a charming reminiscence of going to grandma’s farmhouse
filled with rustic elements, churns, benches and blends of wood and rich
colors.
Beach Cottage inspired by the tranquil colors of the seaside with touches of
driftwood, shells and comfy, relaxed furniture.
Cottage
Garden brings the outdoors inside using the range of colors from the
garden, plants, and trellises giving one the sense of the indoors melding with
the outdoors.
I am sure there are more Cottage Styles -
such as Camp cottage -the possibilities seem endless!
My
friend Maria has a gorgeous Cottage Home – I feel throughout it is a lot of
French Country with touches of Country Cottage. I shared her home with you
here.
I think
it is perfectly fine to blend elements of each cottage style in your personal décor, to flow
from one style to another. To me, the basic element is what appeals to you. It is
what you like – your style. What makes you smile, what makes you comfortable –
your home is the ultimate, welcoming reflection of you.

Hi Kathy, Wonderful post today. I do know this. Cottage is charming and gracious and welcoming. :) Thank you for hosting your wonderful party. xo
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Lynn, I love learning new things and felt some of these things instinctively, but didn't realize the many variances. I appreciate you sharing your blog with Home and Garden Thursday,

Thank you Emily, I agree with you! I love any style ending in cottage!

I like your style, Kathy! Love the touches of red with soft white... looks so cozy and inviting! Two's Company plates look so pretty tied-up in green ribbon. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post about various cottage styles... I like french country with a bit of beach cottage thrown in:) Thanks for this week's party! Have a lovely evening!~Poppy
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy, this is interesting, I've always wondered what are the 'cottage styles', and this was made more clear here. I will add another style...Faery Cottage! :D like mine!
ReplyDeleteThis is distinguished by things of the elements brought inside to life Ex: earth, with plants and organic textures, air with incense and blowing breezes, fire as in candles and in changing lighting usually nothing above head level, and water as in fountains. It also incorporates that uncompromising element that no self respecting Faery would be without: SPARKLE AND SHIMMER! We love things that shimmer and sparkle, as in mercury glass, clear glass, and glitter! LOL
actually I can make a whole post about this and I think I will and compliment it back to this one if you don't mind? I've desperately needed some inspiration and I just felt a sparkle of it! blessings! Lady
GREAT POST. I do think it is a combination of Cottage styles that makes a house feel like your own home. You have some beautiful examples here. I could live with any of these rooms. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteWe are getting ready to start some major projects at home as our house is 27 or so years old and the windows need replacing and the woodwork touched up and list goes on and on. We kind of dread it as we are so busy.
ReplyDeleteYour post is lovely and I guess I like English Country and Shabby Chic best. Truly, they all are just lovely!
Hi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful array of Cottage styles there are. I love them all and I guess my own home is mostly Romantic Cottage with a little English, French, and Shabby thrown in.
If I had been feeling better, I
would have joined you this week but I've been down with a bug off and on for a week now. I enjoyed your post very much.
Blessings,
Sandi
I think whatever style you like-cottage or something else should reflect you and your everyday life, and not just the trend of the week. I do love your bookcase better white, though.
ReplyDeleteYou already know how much I love all of the cottage styles! Lovely post and lovely party. Thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Susan and Bentley
I like every form of cottage style. I keep changing my mind as to my favorite. I try to pull it off at my house, but aside from my master bedroom, I keep flunking.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post and pictures of Cottage Styles. I think I am going in the French Cottage direction, especially with my RED dining room!
ReplyDeleteI love "cottage" style and think my home embraces some aspects of this popular and comfortable design style. I love your breakdown of the various cottage looks, even though I can't quite pinpoint my own look. I am currently working on some furniture painting to bring more of the feel to my home. Perhaps then it will be more evident to me where I fall. I'm thinking of creating a new look - "rustic cottage"....yeah, with a cowboy in residence (the hubs), we might just be blazing a path into a new design style! Great post!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the paint job on your shelves!! And those plates are so neat too!! I love cottage and you are so right about there being so many styles in that category- Still trying to figure out what exactly I am!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the party! My girls have their partying hats on!
I could curl up with a book quite comfortably in your green room! Thanks for hosting. ~ Maureen
ReplyDeleteOh, lovely, lovely pictures!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing and for hosting this delightful party!
Various cottage looks so amazing and comfortable. Add garden and flowers outside your cottage and will surely be a beauty beyond imagination.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I am "Delighted" you stopped by my places. Your before picture was beautiful, and the after just as beautiful. What a lovlely look. I am ecclectic cottage...is there such a thing?
ReplyDeleteKathy,
ReplyDeleteYour changes look lovely! I love everything about cottage style. i haven't decorated too girly because I live with all men, but I love this style! Thank you for hosting!
Sherry
Much as I love the cottage style look, I really don't use it in my own home. I am so envious, but maybe I can start a wall or a tabletop as a start, right? I love your sweet pieced plates. I've seen them at the company's showroom at market before.

ReplyDeleteIt's hard to beat a home decorated in any of these Cottage Styles... all of them make you want to sit and stay a while. Your style definitely shines in your personal decor! Great Job!

This was so interesting for me, Kathy! I found myself thinking, "I'm somewhere between Prairie Cottage and Swedish Country." It helps to truly define what draws your eye and what you surround yourself with. Thanks for the inspiration and direction today! :)

I wanna cottage!
ReplyDeleteI dream about it ALL the time!
Love this post, very helpful in defining - so many cottage styles!
This is such a great post! I'm glad I found it. I love all cottage styles. It's funny, I found a picture for a dream board I made and it was the same photo you have here for Beach Cottage! I guess that must be my favorite style. The homes you pictured are lovely! Have a nice day:)
ReplyDeleteJennifer

ReplyDeleteI think you're right, which ever style it is, if it's you, then it's wonderful. I love the country cottage mostly, with prairie cottage tucked in here and there.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Cindy
Wonderful - thank you for setting it out so beautifully; my style definitely tends to be shabby chic or Swedish country because of the light colours. Perhaps it is because our Winter light in the UK is not always good and those styles work best!
ReplyDeleteThanks for inspiration

I love cottage style! Over the years, my décor has changed a bit here and there, but it has always had a cottage feel. Currently, it's a blend of rustic country farmhouse and romantic shabby European garden. How's that for mixing things up? ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Time Travel Thursday. Hope to see you again this week.
